When Tears Water the Soul: A Tribute to Tears and the Healing Journey
The other day I learned that our album Mining Inner Wisdom is a finalist in three categories for the New Mexico Music Awards. I came home on the verge of tears. Not tears of celebration, but the kind that arise from deep within—grief, tenderness, exhaustion.
Earlier that day, I sat with a courageous client who shared a harrowing story of manipulation and exploitation by a powerful man in her youth. Her pain stirred something old in me—memories of a similar experience in my own life. It reminded me why I do this work: why I keep showing up. Why healing matters so deeply. Why I may never “retire” from this sacred calling.
When I walked in the door that evening, I asked my husband if he could just listen for a few minutes while I told him all the things I was sad about. My heart felt so heavy—not just with gratitude for the recognition our project was receiving, but with the deep, aching pain that birthed it to begin with. And he did make space for my sadness. Quietly. Fully. After thirty plus years together, he knows the value of listening to me in that way. I try to do the same for him, especially now, as he faces his own challenges during these uncertain times.
That evening, my sadness ran deep:
- For the brave stories that may never be told.
- For the innocence lost to unconscious, damaged, and/or selfish offenders.
- For the rollback of progress made by the #MeToo and social justice movements.
- For the way cruelty has been normalized in public life.
- For how our collective trauma is being denied and sanitized just as we were becoming more trauma informed.
- For the division that threatens the fabric of our nation.
- For the girls (and boys) growing up afraid to speak their truth.
- For the pain and grief so many carry alone, not knowing how to heal themselves.
- For the hearts that close up and seek money and power instead of love.
- And for the aching beauty of those who still dare to feel.
As we enter Easter weekend—a season of resurrection and renewal—I’m reminded of the sacredness of tears. Rumi once said, “When God wishes to help, He lets us weep. Wherever water flows, life flourishes; wherever tears fall, Divine Mercy is shown.”
Tears, like spring rain, soften the soil of the soul. They water what’s ready to grow. They cleanse, they nourish, they make space for something new to bloom.
This album is a tribute to those tears—and to the resilient, beautiful souls who find their way back to wholeness after trauma and loss. To all those I’ve had the honor of supporting on your healing journeys: your courage, depth, and inner light inspired this music. May it meet you where you are and gently guide you back to the wisdom within.
Chris and I created Mining Inner Wisdom as more than an album—it’s a legacy of healing. The companion course follows the three-phase trauma model: Resourcing, Expression, Integration. With art, music, mindfulness, and deep inner work, it offers tools to support you even through the darkest nights of the soul.
In this season of renewal, my hope is that our project brings light, truth, and the courage to keep walking, to keep feeling, and to keep becoming all you are meant to be. May it help us remember the progress we’ve made, the stories that matter, and the justice still worth fighting for.
