The Power of Thoughts: Why Feeling Comes Before Affirmation

“Thinking” – a daily doodle

First, thank you to all who wrote in response to my last blog on the power of our tears. Your reflections meant so much. It’s clear the piece resonated deeply—especially during these tender times, when so many of us are doing our best to stay grounded and centered amidst uncertainty.

That same emotional honesty—allowing ourselves to feel—is also at the heart of this next reflection. Because while we often hear the phrase thoughts become things, what’s often missed is the emotional energy underneath those thoughts. Before an affirmation can truly take root, we have to feel what’s underneath. We have to move the energy that lives behind the thought.

Thoughts aren’t just mental blips. They send signals through the nervous system and shape how our bodies respond, how we carry ourselves, and how safe or unsafe we feel inside. And every thought—especially the sticky ones we keep looping—is tied to a feeling. If that feeling is buried, denied, or never digested, we can’t simply “think” our way into a new reality. We have to feel our way into it first.

Affirmations can be beautiful and transformative—but only when they’re anchored in truth. I first discovered their power through the work of Louise Hay in the 1980s, during a time when I was struggling to climb out of depression and unresolved trauma. Her teachings touched something tender in me. I began to practice speaking to myself with gentleness and compassion—even when it felt awkward or unfamiliar.

A closing of a circle, and the opening of a new one

Decades later, returning to her work as a licensed therapist and choosing to become trained in her method was deeply poignant. It was as if I was honoring the roots of my own healing while stepping more fully into my ability to guide others. That training—held on Irish soil, in the land of my ancestors—felt sacred. It wasn’t just professional development; it was a profound homecoming. A closing of a circle, and the opening of a new one.

During the training, we explored the deep roots of our limiting beliefs. We all have them. I gave space to old grief, lingering shame, and the places within me that still felt tight or weighed down. What gradually emerged was a powerful lightness—a renewed connection to my deeper truth. Alongside it came a clear, embodied knowing: the thoughts I choose to entertain can either nourish that light or slowly dim it.

This is why I teach the connection between emotional release and elevated thought. You can’t plant new seeds in soil that’s been packed down by years of hurt. It needs to be softened, often by our tears. And that means giving yourself permission to feel: to grieve, rage, shake, weep. Not to wallow, but to clear. To make space.

In my practice, I often see thoughtful, loving people unknowingly dimming their own light with inner criticism and fear. On the outside, they’re accomplished. But inside, many wrestle with unworthiness or shame they don’t even realize they’re carrying. And those unspoken beliefs hold tremendous power—until we begin to gently bring them to light.

When the Inner Soil Softens

I remember my own unraveling during college—depression, anxiety, and a cascade of gut issues from years of antibiotics prescribed for acne, which was so common in the 1970s. That time knocked me down. It stripped away any illusion that I could think my way through life without feeling. It cracked me open in a way that ultimately set me on a lifelong path of healing.

This is why I feel so strongly: affirmations work best when they arise after the tears, after the trembling, after the surrender. When the body has released the shock and what’s been held is finally acknowledged, the inner soil softens. That’s when a new thought—the kind infused with real love—can truly take root.

Let your thoughts reflect your self-compassion. Don’t use them to gloss over your wounds. When your thoughts grow from honesty, tenderness, and conscious choice, they don’t bypass your pain—they build something solid. They create space for healing, clarity, and resilience.
If you’re curious about exploring the energetic roots of your thoughts and opening to a more loving inner dialogue, here are a few questions to reflect on:

Self-Inquiry: Compassion and the Power of Thought

  • Do I offer myself the same compassion I give others, especially when I’m hurting or unsure?
  • What thought keeps looping in my mind—and what feeling might be fueling it?
  • When I slow down and feel instead of fix, how does that change the way I talk to myself?
  • Am I using affirmations to connect with myself—or to avoid discomfort?
  • Can I believe that healing happens not through control, but through compassion and conscious choice?

These aren’t just journaling prompts—they’re doorways. They help us soften our inner world so that new, nourishing thoughts can take root.
