Surprised by Nature: Embracing the Unexpected Wonders and Healing Impact of Bird Watching

“The earth has music for those who listen.”

When was the last time you truly stopped to listen to the birds singing?

Just the other day, I stepped out of my home office, heading towards the kitchen, when a small gray bird zipped by in our sunroom. It moved quickly and directly, as if it had a purpose. Here in New Mexico, we don’t have many bugs so we often leave the doors open to cool down our sunroom. Usually, birds that wander in panic, but not this one. It flew in and out with silent determination. Later, I noticed it again, sneaking in and out, always with that same confidence. I looked around the sunroom for clues, closed the doors to the outside and smiled. Another encounter with nature. It was a delightful mystery.

Yesterday, while sipping our morning coffee, my husband and I watched aggressive hummingbirds duel over the red yucca and feeders in our rose garden. Black ravens, often depicted as tricksters with supernatural powers by the native tribes that inhabited these lands centuries ago, soared above as bees buzzed in the blue mist spirea.

My husband, with a delighted grin, said “let me show you something,” and led me to the sunroom where we found a nibbled cone of birdseed, the plastic wrapper pulled aside. We realized we had both witnessed our sneaky visitor who had been helping itself. Birds don’t have a great sense of smell but rely on sight to find food. Could our friend have seen the seed cone through the glass? Maybe. More likely it accidentally flew into the sunroom and was delighted when it found a food supply all for itself.  But watching its confident comings and goings was truly amazing.

The Healing Power of Nature: Tuning into Birds for Wellness and Connection

We all know this intuitively, but in our fast-paced world, it’s easy to forget the profound healing nature offers. Birdwatching, a simple yet rewarding activity, can reconnect us with the natural world right in the comfort of our own backyards, community greenspaces, riverbanks and seashores. Birds symbolize freedom, resilience, and the cyclical rhythms of nature. Watching them can be therapeutic, offering solace and inspiration, especially during tough times, and especially in and around our own homes.

How to Tune In and Heal Through Birdwatching- A great way to support your mental health

You don’t need a grand adventure to experience the healing power of birdwatching. Start with just a few minutes a day. Here are a few tips:

  1. Find a Quiet Spot: Whether it’s your backyard, a local park, or a nature reserve, find a place where you can sit quietly and observe.  You may want to put out a hummingbird or seed feeder to attract them to your yard or balcony.  Provide a birdbath as a source of fresh water – you’ll see even more birds!
  2. Be Still and Patient: Birds are more likely to come closer if you remain still and patient. Take deep breaths and let the tranquility of the moment wash over you.
  3. Listen and Look: Tune into the sounds of bird calls and songs. Look for movement in the trees, bushes, and sky. Binoculars can enhance your experience, but they’re not necessary.
  4. Keep a Journal: Document your observations and reflections. Note the different species you see, their behaviors, and how these moments make you feel. This practice can deepen your connection and appreciation.  Even sketch them if you’d like – this will enhance your connection with them.
  5. And if you really get passionate about birds – join a Community: Consider joining a local birdwatching group or online community. Sharing your experiences and learning from others can enrich your journey.

Indeed, birdwatching is a simple yet profound way to reconnect with nature and yourself. It offers moments of wonder, peace, and a deeper understanding of the natural world. As you make time for this practice, you may find yourself feeling more present, grounded, inspired, and healed. So, take a moment each day to look up, listen, and let the birds guide you back to a sense of harmony and belonging.  And don’t ever doubt their intelligence…we continue to be impressed by the determination of our little gray bird in the sunroom.
