“Only the development of compassion and understanding for others can bring us the tranquility and happiness we all seek.” – Dalai Lama
Every week, I sit with people navigating anxiety, depression, addiction, or a quiet ache of emptiness. Even after three decades as a therapist, I’m still struck by how powerful it is to simply speak what’s on our hearts. Until our truth is witnessed and reflected back, it can be hard to hear the deeper voice within—the voice of the soul. Speaking it aloud clears space for that inner wisdom to rise.
So often, the root isn’t personal failure—it’s misalignment. So many are trying to survive systems that reward performance over presence, image over authenticity, productivity over peace. It’s capitalism on overdrive. And what we’re calling “mental health issues” are often signs of a deeper soul wound: we’ve lost contact with who we really are.
Worse still, many were trained out of their own essence by early environments that didn’t honor their feelings, perceptions, or truth. Painful familial conditioning taught them to distrust their own experience. So they learned to disconnect—to adapt, appease, or disappear—until they couldn’t hear themselves anymore.
We were often taught to conform—not to create. To keep up, not to slow down. To make ourselves small and palatable, not bold and alive. It’s no wonder so many feel disengaged from their own inner wisdom.
The Dalai Lama once said he was shocked that people in the West “work and work and work, making themselves sick to earn money—and then use that money to get well.” That’s the madness we’ve normalized. But something is shifting. The outer world is cracking—economically, politically, spiritually. Certainty is crumbling, and with it, our trust in external authorities.
And yet… through the rubble, something beautiful is emerging.
A call to listen.
A call to come back home to ourselves.
Listening for your true voice doesn’t start with speaking. It starts with presence. With stillness. With learning to hear yourself again.
I’m happy to be sharing Module 10 of my Mining Inner Wisdom course this week. It’s all about finding your authentic voice with yourself and others—not the voice shaped by fear or performance, but the voice that rises when we’re truly aligned with our heart. It’s one of the most empowering modules of the course, because it meets that deep human longing to be heard—and to speak from the soul.
Listening Within: 5 Steps to Reclaiming Your Voice
- Slow Down the Noise
Unplug from the swirl of news, social media, and other people’s expectations. Even 10 quiet minutes a day can begin to shift your nervous system. Let your breath guide you back to yourself. - Feel What You Feel
So often, we avoid discomfort. But beneath anxiety or sadness, there’s often a longing—to rest, to express, to be loved or seen. Don’t bypass it. Let it speak. - Ask Real Questions
Try: “What is my soul asking for today?” or “What truth have I been afraid to say out loud?” Don’t force answers. Let them rise from within. - Name Your Longing
Journal about the version of you that feels most alive. What would shift if you gave her/him/them a seat at the table? What would you stop hiding? - Speak for the Greater Good
When we reconnect with who we really are, our voice changes. We stop speaking to impress or defend—and start speaking to connect, to uplift, to imagine a better world. In these chaotic times, it’s essential that we speak our truth—not just for personal liberation, but to help create a new paradigm rooted in compassion, justice, and authenticity.
It will take all of us. Every voice matters. Especially yours.
The Dalai Lama reminds us that joy doesn’t come from status or speed—it comes from compassion. And that compassion has to begin inside. Not just toward others, but toward ourselves.
I see hope every day—in clients who return to creative self care practices, couples who start listening instead of reacting, men who allow long-buried tears to rise. It’s deeply human. And it’s quietly revolutionary.

This is the revolution we need.
Not one of domination—but of truth.
Not just survival—but soulful living.
You have a voice the world needs.
But first, you must learn to hear it.
Quiet the noise.
Listen in.
And then speak—clearly, bravely, from the core of who you really are.
